Professor Wim Maas, who has been a partner and trial attorney at Winston Taylor since November 2010, is also currently a professor at the CatĂłlica Global School of Law in Lisbon, where he has taught international patent litigation since January 2026.

Our latest podcast episode, three years on from the launch of the UPC (June 1, 2026 ip fray article), features an interview with Dr. Maas about the UPC’s achievements, including its high-quality case law and, notably, the Court of Appeal’s “outstanding” decisions, according to Dr. Maas.
We also discuss the UPC’s commitments to proportionate remedies, which came up in a significant case between Edwards Lifesciences and Meril Life Sciences (November 26, 2025 ip fray article), as well as where Dr. Maas hopes to see the UPC go in the next three years. As well as keeping to its promise of facilitating SME litigation, Dr. Maas is eager for the community to set up a UPC bar association to ensure that attorneys across the continent stay on the same page about the evolving case law.
Dr. Maas explains whether the UPC should conduct FRAND determinations and introduces an executive program he will be heading up starting next January at the CatĂłlica Global School of Law in Lisbon for patent professionals (program page). The program will also include a week-long mock trial with real UPC judges.
