Context:
- In October 2023 Pictiva Displays International Ltd sued Samsung Electronics for patent infringement in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. A jury awarded Pictiva a total of $191.4 million in damages in November 2025, finding the asserted claims of two of its patents infringed and not invalid.
- In May 2024, Samsung Display, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, filed petitions for inter partes review (IPR) of the same two patents with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). The PTAB denied institution of one IPR but granted the other, issuing a final written decision in February 2026 finding all challenged claims unpatentable – including one claim found infringed and not invalid by the Eastern District of Texas jury.
