Awaiting potential $1.3B Moderna payout, Arbutus expands Covid-19 patent fight to Pfizer, BioNTech in Canada and UPC

Context: Genevant Sciences GmbH is a subsidiary of Roivant Sciences Ltd. and Arbutus Biopharma’s exclusive licensee for its lipid nanoparticle (LNP) patent portfolio. Arbutus holds an ownership stake of roughly 16% in Genevant’s parent. Arbutus and Genevant settled a years-long patent fight with Moderna over COVID-19 vaccine technology this spring, a deal under which Moderna could pay the two companies jointly up to $2.25 billion depending on a pending U.S. appeal (March 4, 2026 ip fray article). The companies have also been litigating related LNP patents against Pfizer and BioNTech in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey since 2023, a case that remains pending.
