Context: In 2020, NVIDIA acquired Israel-based supplier of end-to-end InfiniBand and Ethernet interconnect solutions, Mellanox Technologies, for $6.9 billion. This was one of NVIDIA’s largest purchases in history – before which the company had not spent more than $400 million. Intel had reportedly also been in the running to make the acquisition, but NVIDIA already had an existing relationship with Mellanox, and the purchase ultimately prevented Intel from monopolizing.
