Federal Circuit affirms PTAB invalidation of G+ Communications 5G patent, leaving Samsung’s damages cut intact

Context: G+ Communications, LLC, a licensing firm that owns 5G standard-essential patents (SEPs) formerly held by China’s ZTE, won a retrial verdict against Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. that more than doubled its original damages award to $142 million (April 18, 2024 ip fray article). That total fell to $61 million after the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) invalidated one of the two asserted patents, U.S. Patent No. 10,736,130 (“Method and device for uplink control signal transmission, user terminal, and storage medium”) in April 2024 (May 2, 2024 ip fray article).
