Access Advance issues call for patents forĀ potential AV1, AV2 pool

Context: Access Advance runs the Video Distribution Patent (VDP) Pool, which covers HEVC, VVC, VP9, and AV1 for video streaming services, and was launched last year (January 16, 2025 ip fray article). It has since grown to include dozens of licensors such as Sharp, ByteDance, and Tencent (March 24, 2026 ip fray article). AV1, developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOM), is often described as royalty-free, but that label only covers the patents AOM members pledged not to charge for. Companies outside AOM, such as Dolby, have separately sued device makers and social media platform operator Snap over AV1 patents in Brazil and the U.S. (March 24, 2026 ip fray article).
