Context: Adeia had previously announced that Paul E. Davis, who had served as the research and licensing firm’s President and CEO since 2022, planned to step down before the end of 2026 (May 6, 2026 ip fray article).
What’s new: Adeia announced today that it has appointed Dipti Vachani to succeed Mr. Davis as CEO (September 28, 2026 Adeia press release). Ms. Vachani was previously Senior Vice President and General Manager of Automotive and IoT at semiconductor designer Arm.
Direct impact: According to a press release, Ms. Vachani “will continue the focus on strengthening [Adeia’s] leadership in the semiconductor and media markets” while also “diversifying… recurring revenue streams [and] identifying and investing in new growth areas”.
Wider ramifications: Adeia’s legacy patents mainly relate to two broad areas: media and semiconductors. In recent years, Adeia has made efforts to license these assets into new verticals, such as e-commerce, while also making small-scale patent purchases to deepen its portfolio. Reporting its quarterly results for this year’s April-June period, the company said it had renewed a key license agreement with Google, in addition to securing several other license deals (August 3, 2026 Adeia press release). Among these agreements—all of which involve its media portfolio—Adeia signed new deals with L’OrĂ©al and “a domestic OTT provider of documentary programming”. It also entered into a multilateral licensing arrangement with patent risk management platform RPX (June 30, 2026 ip fray article). Adeia also uses enforcement to secure licensees, where it feels the need to do so; among other cases on its docket, it recently sued Fubo over TV streaming patents, despite having a license agreement in place with the defendant’s parent company Disney (July 1, 2026 ip fray article).
At Arm, Ms. Vachani spearheaded the development of new licensing initiatives such as Arm Flexible Access, which provided smaller, early-stage businesses and research teams with “low-cost or no-cost” access to a package of Arm IP and tools. She also helped to launch Scalable Open Architecture for Embedded Edge (SOAFEE) in 2021, an industry-led alliance of “automakers, silicon providers, cloud companies, software vendors, and open source communities” collaborating to “advance common software architectures for the future of automotive”.
Before joining Arm in 2018, Ms. Vachani served as Vice President and General Manager of Intel’s IoT Group, and also had stints at Texas Instruments and Skyworks Solutions.
In the press release announcing her appointment, Ms. Vachani gave some indication of where she will be focusing her energies in the months ahead:
