Context: Since August 2025, Unified Patents has filed ex parte requests for the re-examination of 10 Wilus-owned Wi-Fi standard-essential patents (SEPs) at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The patents are listed below the box. Of those filed so far, the USPTO affirmed all claims and granted additional claims in three of the patent re-examinations, according to Sisvel’s Chief IP Officer, Heath Hoglund.
What’s new: Wilus has now won a fourth consecutive USPTO reexamination involving its Wi-Fi SEPs, Mr. Hoglund today announced (October 12, 2026 LinkedIn post by Heath Hoglund). The final six requests remain pending.
Direct impact: The four successes strengthen the patents in Sisvel’s Wi-Fi pool, Mr. Hoglund has noted, but they are also a huge win for Wilus, which has had an eventful year (litigation against TP-Link: August 25, 2026 ip fray article, settlements with Samsung: July 14, 2026 ip fray article and ASUS: May 19, 2026 ip fray article).
Wider ramifications: This is not the first time Unified Patents has engaged in this type of strategy. In China, for example, it targeted 14 video codec patents held by a range of patentees including DivX, Ericsson, Ideahub, GE Video, ETRI, IP Bridge, Dolby, and InterDigital in 2021 (July 10, 2026 Michael Ma article). Of the 14 patents challenged, five were maintained valid, four were declared invalid, and four were partially invalid.
The patents at issue:
- 10,651,992 (“Wireless communication method and wireless communication terminal for coexistence with legacy wireless communication terminal”)
- 12,167,415 (“Wireless communication method and wireless communication terminal, which use discontinuous channel”)
- 11,356,947 (“Wireless communication method and wireless communication terminal, which use discontinuous channel”)
