6. Around the court

6.1 Presidium appoints new presiding judges in Munich

The Presidium of the UPC has announced a series of new judicial appointments effective January 1, 2026, following the Administrative Committee’s July 2025 decision on staffing at both the Court of First Instance (CFI) and the CoA. Judge András Kupecz has been designated as Presiding Judge of the Central Division (CD) Munich, joined by Daniel Severinsson. At the Munich LD, Judge Dr. Daniel Voss (“Voß” in German) will take over as Presiding Judge of the second panel, succeeding Ulrike Voss, with Georg Werner joining the panel. Meanwhile, Ulrike Voss will move to the CoA as Presiding Judge of the third panel, working alongside Ms. Nathalie Sabotier and Mr. Bart van den Broek.

6.2 Cross-border patent battle: Fraunhofer files action in the US

On September 21, 2025, ip fray reported a new filing (item no. 7 of September 21, 2025, UPC roundup), Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e. v. Motorola Mobility & Lenovo, in which Fraunhofer initiated a patent infringement action before the Munich LD concerning EP2951820. In a parallel move, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft launched a separate lawsuit on October 27, 2025, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina against Lenovo (United States) Inc., alleging infringement of several Fraunhofer-owned U.S. patents covering audio and speech coding technologies used in MPEG and AAC standards.

6.3 Halloween cheer at CD Paris
