Adeia continues licensing streak: ends AMD dispute with semiconductor patent deal

Context:

  • Last month, U.S. patent licensing firm Adeia published its 2025 financial report, highlighting a string of successful deals, with 26 new agreements signed in industries spanning OTT, semiconductors, consumer electronics, Pay-TV, and e-commerce (February 24, 2026 ip fray article). The company’s enforcement efforts have started to pay off: between December 2024 and last month, it also signed major agreements with Amazon (December 3, 2024 ip fray article), Disney (December 22, 2025 ip fray article), and Microsoft. It racked up a total revenue of $443 million in 2025 (compared to $376.0 million in 2024), with $182.6 million of that in Q4 alone.
  • On November 3, 2025, Adeia enforced six of its semiconductor-related patents against Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) in the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas (complaint below box). Adeia alleged that AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology, which is a hallmark of the Ryzen X3D gaming CPUs and EPYC server processors, specifically infringed its patents, and, while TSMC manufactures the chips, the design and final sale are conducted by AMD.
  • All in all, Adeia was suing AMD over 10 patents in total in the Western District of Texas and seeking a limited exclusion order (U.S. import ban) in the United States International Trade Commission (USITC or ITC).

What’s new: Adeia has today announced it has signed a multi-year license agreement with AMD, granting the latter access to its semiconductor patent portfolio (March 9, 2026 press release).

Direct impact: This deal brings the four-month patent litigation between the parties to an end.

Wider ramifications: The deal also adds to Adeia’s streak of recent deals, including with firms in the semiconductor industry. The company has a portfolio of patents that cover hybrid bonding, semiconductor packaging, and semiconductor processing technologies, with deals in place with Japan’s Hamamatsu Photonics and Kioxia & Western Digital, among others.
