Alibaba takes Access Advance VDP license; Dahua joins as VDP licensor and returns as HEVC licensee after disputes

Context: Access Advance established its Video Distribution Patent (VDP) pool last year, offering a single license covering various patents essential to video codec-related standards. (January 16, 2025 ip fray article).

What’s new and direct impact:

  • Alibaba has now become a licensee to the VDP pool. It was already a VDP licensor; its subsidiary Youku, a streaming platform, was already a VDP licensee (August 11, 2025 Access Advance press release).
  • Dahua Technology, a provider of video-based surveillance solutions, has joined as a VDP licensor; and has also become a licensee to Access Advance’s separate HEVC Advance pool.

Wider ramifications: Access Advance’s VDP pool is a customized “multi-codec” offering, giving implementers the chance to license standard-essential patents (SEPs) across all or any of the four key video coding standards: High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), Versatile Video Coding (VVC), VP9, and Alliance for Open Media Video 1 (AV1).
