Context: For the past year, InterDigital has been on a winning streak against Disney. The Munich I Regional Court handed down three injunctions on separate patents covering stream overlay technology, high dynamic range (HDR) (November 21, 2025 ip fray article), and HEVC encoding (February 13, 2026 ip fray article). The UPC then added two more wins, an 11-country injunction from its Mannheim Local Division (LD) in June (June 16, 2026 ip fray article) and a second 11 country injunction from Dusseldorf in July (July 23, 2026 ip fray article). Both of those UPC wins were built on HEVC, a technology tied to industry standards. Just last week, InterDigital also said it was expanding its UPC case against Disney to cover VP9, the codec Disney switched to as a workaround (August 24, 2026 ip fray article). InterDigital has also won injunctions from a court in Brazil covering HEVC and AVC encoding patents (September 11, 2025 ip fray article).
