We just learned from Presiding Judge Dr. Oliver Schoen (“Schön” in German) of the Landgericht München I’s (Munich I Regional Court) 7. Zivilkammer (7th Civil Chamber) that his court has already received more than 275 new patent actions in 2025. The number the court reported for 2024 was 231 (ahead of any other German court), so it has increased by 20% and there still are approximately six weeks to go.
The Unified Patent Court (UPC) has not recently been able to publish its caseload figures, which is attributable to the new case management system, but it appears that the Munich I Regional Court will still receive more filings this year than the UPC gets new patent infringement complaints and applications for provisional measures (i.e., preliminary injunction (PI) motions). The best month of the UPC that has been reported so far was 2025 with 31 new patent infringement complaints (item 10.2 of our July 19, 2025 UPC Roundup). The UPC is growing, particularly with the increasing popularity of the Unitary Patent, but in 2025 the Munich court will probably still lead in terms of the number of cases.
Despite the enormous case load, the Munich I Regional Court strives to adjudicate each case within one year of filing. Some cases have recently come to judgment significantly faster than that, such as two InterDigital v. Disney matters (November 21, 2025 ip fray article).
The Munich I Regional Court has also become a major PI venue. We have recently reported on a PI relating to more than 20 countries (September 29, 2025 ip fray article) and Europe’s first-ever SEP PI (November 20, 2025 ip fray article).
