Disney told Velos it preferred an Avanci Video license, but hasn’t taken that one either.
Context:
- Sharp and Huawei are suing The Walt Disney Company in the Munich I Regional Court over High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC, H.265) patents (December 19, 2025 ip fray article). Earlier this month, it turned out (March 10, 2026 ip fray article) that Huawei has expanded its enforcement campaign against Disney to the Unified Patent Court (UPC). Both Sharp and Huawei are Avanci Video licensors.
- Disney is also defending against InterDigital (February 13, 2026 ip fray article). InterDigital does not license its multimedia patents through Avanci Video. The recent cancelation of a hearing could have been harbinger of a settlement, but there is only limited hope as Dolby has now also entered the fray (no pun intended) (March 4, 2026 ip fray article).
- Licensing firm Velos Media obtained an anti-antisuit injunction (AASI) against ByteDance (TikTok) last month (February 13, 2026 ip fray article), thereby protecting its enforcement action in the Western District of Texas.
