Corning wins UPC injunction against TCL TVs over glass sheet patent, validating Hisense decision to settle just before CD ruling on validity

Context:

  • Optical products giant Corning is arguably the oldest company in the world to be a key supplier to the AI economy.
  • Unrelated to AI, Corning is actively enforcing glass sheet manufacturing patents. The most recent settlement with Hisense became known two months ago (February 19, 2026 ip fray article) and followed similar deals with HKC (July 2025), VIZIO (September 2025), and LG (also September 2025).
  • It was presumably not a sheer coincidence that the Hisense settlement fell into place shortly before
    • a judgment by the Munich seat of the Unified Patent Court’s (UPC) Central Division (CD) in a revocation action brought by a TCL entity (one that was not being sued for infringement), upholding a key Corning patent (Section 3.2 of our March 1, 2026 UPC Roundup) and
    • an infringement trial in the UPC’s Mannheim Local Division (LD), which was held on March 3, 2026.
