Context: Dolby Laboratories is one of the most seasoned players in standard-essential patent (SEP) licensing, actively using litigation (June 10, 2026 ip fray article), participation in multiple pools (November 18, 2025 ip fray article), and IP-driven M&A (June 6, 2024 ip fray article) to advance its commercial goals and generate revenue (March 31, 2025 ip fray article).
What’s new and direct impact: Florida Atlantic University (FAU) announced that it has assigned a portfolio of SEPs (and potential SEPs) to Dolby (August 10, 2026 FAU press release). The portfolio, which is described as comprising “683 intellectual property assets, including 250 granted patents worldwide and 73 United States patents” and is relevant to the H.226 Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard, was developed in collaboration with video compression technology developer OP Solutions (OPS). Financial details were not disclosed.
Wider ramifications: To give some idea of the portfolio’s potential scope for licensing, FAU President Adam Hasner, as cited in a press release, said its applications “span digital media, national security, autonomous systems and emerging AI technologies”. Moreover, at least 16 of the U.S. patents in the acquired portfolio have already been declared essential to the VVC standard, and are available to license via the VVC Advance pool operated by Access Advance. As part of Dolby’s broader portfolio, the patents acquired from FAU and OPS could provide additional leverage for the U.S. audio company in its ongoing disputes and licensing campaigns with the likes of Snap (July 15, 2026 ip fray article), InterDigital (March 4, 2026 ip fray article), and Skyworth (May 29, 2026 ip fray article), among others.
FAU and OPS partnered in 2018 to commercialize research being done in the university’s College of Engineering and Computer Science.
The College’s Dean, Stella Batalama, said the deal with Dolby is “a clear example of FAU research reaching real products and returning value to the university”.
Working in partnership with OPS, the College “took video-compression research from the lab into a global standard, and that work is now part of Dolby’s portfolio,” she added.
Robert J. L. Moore, President of OPS, said in a social media post that he expects the deal to “wind up being one of 2026’s largest patent transactions” (August 10, 2026 Robert J. L. Moore LinkedIn post).
OPS and FAU previously assigned a co-developed portfolio of VVC-relevant patents to Mitsubishi Electric, another VVC Advance licensor (January 21, 2021 FAU press release).
OPS was itself among the founding licensors of the VVC Advance pool in January 2022; at time of writing it was no longer listed as a licensor, presumably because it has assigned all of its contributed SEPs to other pool participants.
