Podcast: interview with SEP litigation veteran Dr. Christof Augenstein on UPC trends and predictions, long-arm jurisdiction powers

Dr. Christof Augenstein is the founding partner of Kather Augenstein – a specialised, Dusseldorf-based firm established in 2016 that was set up with a view to the Unified Patent Court. He has over 20 years of experience as an intellectual property litigator, and has served as counsel for several major patent holders, including Panasonic in its suit against Oppo, as well as defended licensees, such as Volkswagen and Vodafone.

Dr. Augenstein is also currently Chairman of the Standing Committee for the Unitary Patent and Unified Patent Court, and a lecturer on the UPC at the Center for International Intellectual Property Studies at the University of Strasbourg – where, among other things, he has been involved in the training of the newly appointed technical UPC judges.

Our latest podcast episode, released today, features an interview with Dr. Augenstein about the biggest trends in the Unified Patent Court this year, including the rise in pharmaceutical patent cases, as well as his expectations for next year. We also discussed the potential effects that long-arm jurisdiction powers of European courts (February 25, 2025 ip fray article) could have on UPC patent infringement cases and extraterritorial SEP rulings, such as interim licenses, among other topics.
