Context: Maxell and Samsung have been fighting a three-case, multi-patent campaign at the UPC since February 2025, when the Japanese electronics maker sued Samsung’s Korean parent and its German, French, Benelux, and Italian units over a family of patents covering so-called cast technology, the ability to hand off what is showing on a phone screen to a TV set and back again. Samsung has responded with a counterclaim for revocation in each case. The pattern so far has not favored Maxell: the Munich Local Division (LD) already revoked a related patent, EP2579587 (“Display device and play-back device”), in May 2026, and the Hague LD revoked a second one, EP2061230 (“Portable terminal, information processing apparatus and content display system”), in August 2026, both times on the strength of the same Sony prior art document.
