Last month, John Han, who has headed up Qualcomm’s IP licensing unit for a decade, announced his promotion from Senior Vice President to Executive Vice President of Qualcomm Technology Licensing (QTL).

“This is the highest title I will ever get in my career, and I really appreciate the company for recognizing me in this way,” he told ip fray in an interview this week. Mr. Han does not expect anything to change in terms of his operations, but he will have to take “more note” of the wider company’s long-term strategy.

“I am a very relationship-building-focused person; I like to know who I am talking to, and I like for them to see me as someone they can trust – so doing things with a business endgame in mind, rather than pushing us into litigation,” he added.

During the interview, he also reflected on his career to date, discussed the future of the 6G standard-essential patent (SEP) licensing market, and expanded on Qualcomm’s stance on licensing SEPs to IoT markets.
