Lenovo and China Mobile join Avanci EV Charger program as licensors; Japanese licensee signs up

Context: Avanci launched its EV Charger program in late 2023 to provide pool licenses to standard-essential patents (SEPs) relevant to connected electric vehicle (EV) charging systems (December 5, 2023 Avanci press release).

What’s new and direct impact: Avanci EV Charger has welcomed two new licensors into the fold: China Mobile and Lenovo. The program has also signed an as-yet unnamed Japanese manufacturer as its 16th licensee. The news was shared on social media by Marianne Frydenlund, Vice President, Avanci IoT (July 8, 2026 Marianne Frydenlund LinkedIn post).

Wider ramifications: The three new joiners represent promising momentum for Avanci EV Charger, following last week’s news of Nokia coming on board as a licensor (July 1, 2026 ip fray article). In an announcement made at the time, Mika Viertiƶ, Nokia’s Head of IoT Licensing, said the “rapid expansion of connected EV charging infrastructure makes efficient access to cellular technologies increasingly important”.

Fellow patent pool operator Via Licensing Alliance also has an EV charging program, which counts Dolby, Siemens, Bosch, and LG Energy Solution among its eight publicly-announced licensors.

As for Avanci, its other programs have racked up a number of licensors and licensees in recent months, with a particular focus on Asia. Its 4G Vehicle and 5G Vehicle pools now have 11 Chinese licensees (June 7, 2026 ip fray article) including Geely (May 21, 2026 ip fray article) and PACCAR (April 22, 2026 ip fray article). In April, Sharp joined Avanci’s WiFi 6 program as a licensor (April 8, 2026 ip fray article).
