Today, Qualcomm announced the renewal of its global patent license agreement with Apple, “effective April 1, 2027”.
“We are pleased to extend the Apple license agreement,” said John Han, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Qualcomm Technology Licensing (QTL).

The single most interesting question is for how long the agreement was extended. The question had always been whether Apple’s willingness to meet Qualcomm’s royalty demands would at some point be adversely affected by its envisioned ability to rely on its own baseband chips even at the upper end of the market.
Even after the 2019 settlement (which was announced during opening statements at a San Diego antitrust trial), they kept litigating, but not over alleged infringements: Apple continued to challenge various Qualcomm patents in different jurisdictions, among them China (June 20, 2024 ip fray article).
For the time being, it is not possible to draw major conclusions from today’s announcement other than that the threat of near-term infringement litigation has gone away. We will try to obtain more information and report in more detail once it becomes available.
