Volvo Cars is the latest licensee to Avanci’s Wi-Fi 6 Vehicles program, with more to be revealed soon

Context: Avanci launched its Wi-Fi 6 Vehicles program for pool licensing of wireless standard-essential patents (SEPs) to the automotive industry earlier this year (March 4, 2026 ip fray article). Since then, Mercedes-Benz, General Motors (GM), and Ford have been announced as licensees to the program, with a further three licensees signed but remaining undisclosed (September 16, 2026 ip fray article).

What’s new: Avanci has revealed Volvo Cars has the Wi-Fi 6 Vehicles program’s latest licensee in a social media post.

Direct impact: Volvo Cars represents another coup for Avanci’s nascent Wi-Fi licensing program, which has now announced three big-name licensees in quick succession this month. It’s also a boon for the pool operator after it quietly wound-down its abortive smart meter-focused program (September 25, 2026 ip fray article).

Wider ramifications:

  • Volvo Cars is one of the three unnamed Wi-Fi 6 licensees that Avanci had already teased when it announced Ford and GM earlier this month, ip fray understands.
  • Hyundai is another possibility as one of the licensees, given its apparent settlement of a U.S. complaint over Wi-Fi SEPs brought by Avanci licensor Malikie Innovations (September 17, 2026 ip fray article).

Volvo Cars and its affiliate Polestar are already licensees to Avanci Vehicle’s 4G and 5G programs for cellular SEPs (May 8, 2024 ip fray article); though Polestar’s logo was not on the Avanci Wi-Fi 6 Vehicles webpage at time of writing.

Geely, which is Volvo Cars’ majority owner, can also be assumed to have signed up to an Avanci 5G license earlier this year (May 21, 2026 ip fray article).
